To place a private call in the United States, you would first dial *67, wait for the dial tone to return to normal, then continue with the dialing instructions as found on this site. This will hide your telephone number from the person receiving the call.
In the UK, add 141 before dialing to block your number from the person you are calling.
Alternatively, if you want to display your private number when calling, you would first dial *82 to unblock a private number.
